EYFS Term Topics

Foundation Stage Topic Term 1

The whole school topic for Term 1 is ‘Bristol’ and Beyond’. In the Early Years Foundation Stage we will be focussing on learning ‘All About Me’. We will be exploring ourselves, our school, our family and our own personal heritage. If you have any show and tell items or information about the local area please see your child’s class teacher. Not only will we be discussing these themes in school but we will be setting a family half term homework challenge to make a personal timeline or commemorative plate.

We will be reading focus texts linking to our topic work and we will carry out plenty of cross-curricular activities linked to these texts. In particular, we will be reading plenty of Julia Donaldson books across the Foundation Stage so if you have any at home that we could read as end of day stories please bring them in! Similarly, if you have any resources or ideas to contribute to our learning in Nursery and Reception, please let us know!

In Nursery we will be reading Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson and we will be discussing our families and feelings in connection to this story. We will also be reading Dear Zoo, linking this to our family pets.

In Reception we will be reading Elmer and discussing how we are all special and unique.

We will also be reading The Three Little Pigs, linking this to our homes. We will explore building houses and experimenting with different window materials as well as identifying various shapes in our house designs. Towards the end of the term we will be reading Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell and we will be exploring the themes of team work, completing various team challenges to help us form friendships with our peers. 

 

Foundation Stage Topic Term 2
 
The whole school topic for Term 2 is ‘Light Up The World’.

In Reception we will be exploring shadows. We will use torches and a variety of objects to explore making shadows. We will also explore our own shadows and we will try to draw around our friend’s shadow outside if we have a sunny day!  To link with our initial Halloween themed texts, we will also explore making shadows using pumpkins!

Our focus texts this term are ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson and ‘Aaaarrgghh Spider!’ by Lydia Monks. These stories link to Halloween and also cover themes of inclusion and sharing. halloWe will carry out plenty of cross-curricular activities linked to these texts, such as sharing objects, taking turns, playing circle games and much, much more!

Foundation Stage Topic Term 3
 
The whole school topic for Term 3 is ‘What a load of junk!’

In Reception we will be exploring junk modelling with a focus on making clothing accessories and jewellery for a junk themed catwalk show!

Our focus texts this term are ‘The Gingerbread Man’, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and ‘Biscuit Bear’. We will carry out plenty of cross-curricular activities linked to these texts, such as baking, exploring the outdoors, creative crafts, counting and describing.

Foundation Stage Topic Term 4

The whole school topic this term is ‘It’s a small world!’

In the first week of term 4, Reception will be exploring Chinese New Year.  Chinese New Year is on the 19th February and 2015 is the Year of the Goat. Our half term home-school challenge is to bring in an object or a fact relating to Chinese New Year so that we can share what we have found in circle times and show and tell sessions. In school, we will be making various items which link to this topic, such a red money wallets, animal zodiac images and model goats. We will also be reading the Chinese Zodiac story to find out more about the various zodiac animals. We may even try doing our own lion and dragon dances in school too!
 

Foundation Stage Topic Term 5

The whole school topic for Term 5 is ‘Horrible Histories’.

In Reception, we will be doing an author study for one of our favourite writers – Julia Donaldson! Over the Easter holiday we will be asking children to not only read as many Julia Donaldson books as they can, but to research Julia Donaldson and find out a fact about her history. We will share our show and tell items in the first week of Term 5.

Foundation Stage Topic Term 6

We have a busy term ahead! We will begin the term reading Commotion in the Ocean and Billy’s Bucket. We will be doing lots of rhyming and non-fiction writing about ocean creatures. In maths we will explore sharing, halving and doubling as well as time and shape. This term Reception will be performing a class assembly. Parents are very welcome to attend so we hope to see you there. Apple class assembly is on Thursday 18th June and Ash class assembly is on Thursday 25th June. We also have sports day to look forward to! Early Years’ sports day is on Wednesday 10th June. Furthermore, we will be going on a Reception trip to Old Down Country Park, where we will go on an exciting welly walk and encounter various animals. Towards the end of the term we will be preparing for the transition to Year 1 by visiting the children’s new classrooms and teachers.
